The 9 weekly workshops were held at a local youth centre with a group of grade 7 & 8 students. After engaging the youth with the LML framework we had some great discussions on how tobacco impacts our lives. Armed with the knowledge of how tobacco marketing manipulates young people, and how the tobacco industry negatively affects our physical & mental health and our environment, the youth then explored the 3 urban arts genres of hip hop dance, graffiti art and the spoken word. We had three amazing art educators come and work with the youth in each of those fields.
The result was an energizing, fun, powerful and creative expression of positivity that was shared with the whole community in an evening performance. Local municipal councilors attended along with the participants’ friends and family. We hope this spreads the tobacco free message and that decision makers take note of the importance of tobacco free environments for positive youth & community development.
